Women’s Rugby Update

TOWNSVILLE WOMEN’S RUGBY UPDATE

Now in its 7th year, Women’s Rugby in Townsville has expanded once again by welcoming 2 new teams into the competition with LARC’s and Burdekin fielding a team each for the 2019 season.

Teachers West have continued their dominance in the Women’s division this season by being the only team undefeated. Credit must go to their defence as they have only let 86 points in over a period of 13 games. The Bulldogs will be eyeing off the Grand Final spot and they will be very difficult to beat if this form continues. University are a team on the rise and well inline to book a finals spot as they sit in second spot on the Women’s ladder. They are currently locked in a fierce battle with North Ward to secure second spot on the ladder as only 11 points separate the two teams. With some great victories under their belt this year, University know that they will need to continue the good performances to prevent dropping down to third place. North Ward, however, have seemed to really come together and started to play some attractive rugby. The ladies from North Ward have struggled this year with numbers, but a great performance against an improved Burdekin last week really sent a message to the competition that they are here to play and are serious title contenders. Burdekin are the team that is forever improving, they will need to find a few more victories if they want to play finals rugby this year. They only sit 2 points ahead of fifth place LARC’s, but recent performances tell that they are slowly forming combinations and playing with confidence. Their effort against North Ward last week was fantastic, but they need to continue that form as they play LARC’s this weekend in a big game for finals hopes. The LARC’s ladies are in a very similar situation, a couple of unlucky losses and some tough results has made their first season in the competition a challenging one. The Army team play Burdekin this weekend and a victory will see them leapfrog them into 4th place with only several rounds remaining. Both teams want to have their first taste of Finals Rugby and it is going to be interesting who seals that final spot.

Good luck to all 5 teams for the remainder of the season!
