Masters Rugby Union

Masters Rugby is a social, inclusive format of the game for players aged 35+, with no club affiliation required to get involved.

The Townsville Brolgas Masters currently feature in our annual Remembrance Day fixture against the Army Masters, a highlight on the rugby calendar. In 2026, we’re aiming to expand the program by hosting 4–5 Masters games, including a trip to Airlie Beach as part of the Viking Cup.

We’re also excited to be building towards a Masters Women’s competition in 2026, with the goal of getting this new pathway up and running and welcoming even more players to the game.

Annual Remembrance Day Games

The Remembrance Day games showcase a full day of rugby, with the Masters match opening the event, followed by the Women’s and Men’s 1st Grade fixtures.

Revived in the mid-2010s, the annual Army vs Townsville clash builds on a rivalry spanning more than 50 years, originally contested for the RSM Jim Healy Memorial Trophy. Now the final rugby event of the season, the matches honour those who have made the ultimate sacrifice while celebrating the strong rugby culture in both communities.

The addition of the Women’s and Masters games has elevated the occasion, with the Masters competing for the Nicholls-Bourke Memorial Shield and the Women’s match growing into a full XVs contest played for the Bolton-Sapwell Shield, highlighting the spirit of Mateship, respect and camaraderie at the heart of rugby.
